Our approach
When you might need a deep cleaning.
Some patients have plaque and tartar that has worked its way below the gumline, causing inflammation and bone loss. The treatment is scaling and root planing (SRP) — often called a 'deep cleaning.'
SRP requires local anesthetic, is usually done one half of the mouth at a time, and is followed by 3-month maintenance cleanings until the gums are stable. We only recommend it when it's clinically necessary.

A routine cleaning is usually painless and comfortable. If your gums are sensitive or inflamed we take extra care and can numb the area, and keeping up with regular cleanings actually makes future visits more comfortable.
A typical cleaning and exam takes about 45 minutes to an hour. If it has been a while since your last visit or you need a deeper cleaning, we may schedule a little extra time.
Most patients do best with a professional cleaning and exam every six months. If you are prone to gum disease, we may recommend more frequent visits to keep your smile healthy.
